REMEMBERING THE BEATLES
20TH Anniversary of the Beatles appearance on the Ed
Sullivan Show, 1954.

THEY HELPED ME
In June 1963, Terry Klaus graduated from San Juan High School. With noimmediate goals in mind, the shy teenager, who loved music, turned to thenew British beat. And, as she says today, "It took over my whole life".
What ensued was a lifelong fascination with the Beatles and the wholeBritish Invasion. Her first step was corresponding with a host of penpals in England and the United Kingdom. They exchanged gossip andrecords. Later, Klaus started a local Ringo Starr Fan Club. which oneweek caused her mail box to be deluged with 1.500 letters.
In 1964, she became a founding member of Johnny Hyde's Gear Club. Whenthe Beatles performed at San Francisco's Cow Palace that summer, Klauswas there. And she was there the next year. And the next year for thefinal concert at Candlestick Park. "It was total, outrageous noise, "remembers Klaus of Candlestick. "A friend of mine had made a sign thatread 'Hi George! " Somehow he saw it from the stage and waved. My friendfreaked out! I had to pacify her for the next 10 minutes. We were goingcrazy. I'll never forget those concerts.
In 1966. Klaus packed her bag and sailed to England. She visitedLiverpool. toured the Cavern Club, took a ferry across the Mersey. InLondon (Nottingham really) she shared a beer with Eric Clapton, who wasjust then starting a band called Cream. She partook of musical history, and fulfilled a dream. Now the 38-year old Klaus. who works for the statesays happily of the experience: "I was always so shy. The Beatles helpedme grow up. They widened my friendships around the world. I came back(from England) a better person. They did a lot for me.

(NOTE: It wasn't explained in the article why I felt that I had come backa better person, but I felt that way because I had seen the "drug scene"first hand over there, and I didn't like it at all, so personally I saidNO to drugs early on. I know that the 60's music scene included drugs, and I wasn't unaware of it, but I did enjoy the days and nights in SanFrancisco, Haight-Ashbury, Fillmore, the music, the love, etc. withoutDRUGS] !!!)

PALS FINALLY MEET
After nearly 26 years of letter writing, Mrs. Maree Holland of Napier andMiss Terry Klaus of California finally met. Miss Klaus is currently on aneight-week holiday, visiting New Zealand and Australia. and has taken aweek to visit her Napier pen friend.
"I remember writing to Maree as far back as 1962 after she'd sent me anarticle on the Beatles being voted as best up-and- coming group, " MissKlaus said.
Many of the pair's earlier letters were filled with news of the newestmusic trends and bands.
"I knew all the new trends before anybody else at school did", Mrs.Holland said.
"I used to think my life was very dull compared with Terry's. She used towrite about the concerts she'd been to and she even met a few of thestars".
In 1966 Miss Klaus visited Liverpool and toured all the old Beatleshaunts, she even established a fan club for Ringo Starr.
'The mailman would walk up to the door with an armful of letters fromRingo's fans. When he'd hand them over he'd say "Don't smile yet, that'sonly the first load", Miss Klaus laughed.
At one stage the pair were sending letters to each other once afortnight. When Maree got married and started having children thecorrespondence began to slow.
"I didn't know Maree had given birth to her fifth child until after ithad happened, Miss Klaus said. "I had some Christmas stockings ready tosend over and had to hurriedly make another for the new born.
A meeting of the two is something Mrs. Holland had hoped for for a longtime.
Mrs. Holland was hoping to take her pen friend on a tour of Napier beforeshe goes on to Australia.
