Joseph Smith was born in London, England, approximately 1849. He leftschool at the young age of 12. Not having a private influence to helphim, which was needed for promotions, he worked his way up on his own forthe civil service of Great Britain to a position of Inland RevenueSupervisor. During these years he gave himself an education, becomingfluent in the French language, and an enthusiastic Shakespearean scholar.He had two marriages. The first we have no name of spouse. but we knowthey had two children.

Joseph, known as Seth. No other information.

Mabel was born July 30, 1874, in England. She died in Chicago, Illinoisabout 1943/44. At the age of 70 she was working in a defense plant, thiswas 1943. She arrived in Canada as a "mail order bride for a Mr. TomWilkinson, to whom she married and then moved to the states, followingher half brother. She and Tom had no children.

Sometime during the 1890's, Joseph's wife was ill. A young neice of theill woman was sent for and she was to care for her. Joseph's wife died,and he married the neice, Nellie Rose Mason, on August 14, 1892, inNottingham, England. Nellie Rose was the daughter of John and Mary Ann(Brown) Mason, born March 14, 1867, in Shoreham- by-the-Sea, Sussex. oneof seven children. Her siblings were filbert. Edith Alice. Nary, Blanche.Will and Ernest. Nellie's mother Mary Ann was born in 1839, she died onJanuary 6, 1914. She is buried in the Portslade Cemetery, Sussex. BothPortslade and Shoreham are on the south coast of Britain. not far fromBrighton. On the wedding certificate of Nellie Rose and Joseph, herfather John was listed as a Domestic Servant (Valet), and also listed asdeceased. Joseph and Nellie Rose had two children.

In 1913, the family emigrated to Alberta, Canada. Hilda's older brotherDoug had left first, the others followed. While living in the McCaffertydistrict just south of Edgerton. Alberta. Joseph entered the local U.F.A.and took a leading part in its activities; acting as secretary during1918. While visiting the Calgary convention in 1920 at the age of 71 hewas invited to the platform as the oldest delegate, and he addressed theconvention. Nellie Rose died following surgery on March 31, 1920, and sheis buried in the Edgerton Cemetery. After her death Joseph returned toEngland. He died on January 30. 1923. and is buried next to his wife inEdgerton.
