DELILAH JUNE (ALWOOD) OMDAL (1919 - 2013)
De Omdal passed away September 29, 2013 at the LaConner Retirement Inn in LaConner, Washington. She was born to William and Lerah Alwood in Edgerton, on the prairie of Alberta, Canada on September 15, 1919. Her family moved to Washington when De was five years old, and she completed her elementary grades at the Blanchard School. When her father took a job at a lumber mill in Aberdeen, the family moved to a house on the Wishkah River, where De spent her teenage years. She graduated from Weatherwax High School in 1937.
Following graduation, she went back to the Skagit Valley to visit her Harry Alwood cousins. While working as a waitress at the Orchard Restaurant in Allen, De met her future husband on the day Ben Omdal rode through town on a horse and directly into the restaurant! She and Ben were married June 6, 1939.
De was an unusual 1950's mother who worked at several local businesses for many years, including Kalstrom's Restaurant (now the Rhododendron Cafe) in East Edison, the Oyster Bar on Chuckanut Drive, Hudson's Grocery in Edison, Miller's Department Store in Mount Vernon, Bluhm's Grocery in Edison, Stowe's in Burlington, and Harvey's Grocery in East Edison. She also sold Avon products and in summer was a field boss at the Anderson Berry Farm in Bow.
After the war she was a Civil Air Patrol volunteer on Samish Island, and when her children were in school she was an active member of the Edison Grade School PTA. She was a member of the Edison Lutheran Church from 1955 to the present. She enjoyed doing things for others, especially her children, grandchildren, and friends.
Preceding her in death were her husband Ben Omdal, sister Vera Bullo, and brothers-in-law Charles Turner and Wayne Bullo.
She is survived by her son Jim Omdal and his wife Eleanor of Kent; daughter Deanna Omdal Scott and her husband Randy Koster of Mt Vernon; daughter-of-the-heart Ellen Derkland of Burlington; sister Helen Turner of Aberdeen; brother James Alwood and his wife Eileen of Hoquiam; grandchildren Bret Omdal, Kathalene Scott Cassels, Natalie Scott Koncz, and five great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at the Edison Lutheran Church on November 16, 2013 at 11:00 a.m. Lunch will be served.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Edison Lutheran Church or a charity of your choice .
The family wishes to thank the staff at Island Hospital, especially doctors Kotal and Brown, and the staff at LaConner Retirement Inn, especially Pauline, James, Olivia, and Todd. Published in Skagit Valley Herald Publishing Company on Nov. 6, 2013
